ASUU declares nationwide strike, Orders lecturers to leave classroom immediately

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has on Monday declared a nationwide strike and ordered all its members to leave the classrooms immediately. – ASUU declares nationwide strike, Orders lecturers to leave classroom immediately

The Union made it known to the public in a news conference that the purpose of the strike was to compel the federal government to meet with its demands, president of ASUU, in the person of Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the industrial action would last for an initial period of four weeks which is equal to a month.

He made it known that the intention of the Union was not to make students sit at home, and would not want to disrupt the academic calender, but lamented that the demands of the union was not yet met by the government as promised.

According to him, the government is meant to call the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, to order over the unpaid Earned Academic Allowances of its members in the university.

He further stated that ASUU had come to an agreed template with the federal government, but that Ogunbodede refused to pay, stressing that failure to pay using that template is a misappropriation.
