What’s BVN?
The Bank Verification Number (BVN) is like a unique security number, but for commercial banks and other money related / financial institutions, it is used to identify an individual with their bank account details. It is a unique 11-digit number allocated to you upon successful biometric registration which involves thumb printing and facial capture.
Biometric registration however refers to the identification of an individual based on their unique physiological attributes such as fingerprint, voice, facial features, etc. In this case, we are looking at fingerprint and facial capture.
In order to manage the increasing compromise of customer security data like passwords and PINs, and the challenges different banks face with identity management, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in collaboration with all licensed Nigerian banks launched a centralised biometric identification system which they called the Bank Verification Number (BVN), on the exact day of February 14, 2014.
Ever since then, the BVN has been in good use to identify customers. But many people have issues obtaining their BVN and accessing roboust financial services simply because they forget or don’t have them saved somewhere.
As luck has it, or should we leave the credit to our hardworking developers, you don’t have to enter the banking hall to obtain your precious BVN.
Infact, you can check your BVN number wherever you are, on your phone, without even compromising your own security. Then you can save it for future use.
Good News is that all telecom providers in Nigeria enable users to check their bvn be it mtn, glo, airtel, or 9mobile.
How to check BVN on MTN, Airtel, GLO, and 9mobile
The very first thing to do before using this service is to ensure that whatever line you wish to use is the exact same one you registered the BVN with.
If you registered with your MTN line, simply use that same MTN line to check your BVN because you can’t use a seperate line other than that first one.
After that has been established, you can now go ahead and check your BVN with the simple steps:
- Locate and go to your phone dialer and dial the USSD code *565*0#.
- Wait for a moment until the 11-digit number pops up.
- Make sure you copy the number. You can either copy it for immediate use at that time or save it for later use. However, simply know that the service is not free and you’ll be charged a little amount of 20 naira for the transaction. So, saving for later use is commonly advisable for people who can’t afford to tip telcoms a whole 20 bucks every time they want to check their BVN.
Please note that checking your BVN is exactly the same process across all lines, mtn, glo, airtel, 9mobile. it is also the same across all the banks. You use the same code to check your BVN as a GTB or UBA or access or zenith bank customer because everyone is allocated one unique BVN that’s used across all the banks.
